Types of Lower Receivers
Because receivers are so dedicated to interchangeability, lower receivers come in different styles that offer various levels of customization, power, and durability. When you search for available options, you’ll most likely see them differentiated by type and material. The two most common types of material you’ll find for lower receivers are 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 aluminum. While the 7075-T6 is stronger and more durable, the 6061-T6 is perfect for hunters on a budget. Both styles can be used for hunting, self-defense, and range use. The choice of material is mainly dependent on your priorities.
Stripped Lower Receivers
As the name suggests, the most stripped-down version of a lower receiver. This style does not come with any of the usual internal components, such as a trigger, magazine well, safety, or other key things. The stripped-down nature allows a builder to customize the parts they want fully. Recommend more for experienced shooters who have a solid understanding of what they want and what works best for them.
Complete Lower Receivers
Complete lower receivers are ideal for those who are content with choosing from a pre-assembled line. They require no extra work on the part of the owner and are less likely to be complicated by fancy bells and whistles. They are also ideal for those who are just starting with AR-15s.
Lower vs. Upper Receiver
AR-15s are ideal for gun enthusiasts seeking to familiarize themselves with firearms’ interworkings. They consist of unique exchangeable components, the upper receiver and lower receiver, that must be combined to function as a gun.A lower receiver and upper receiver will slot together to form the complete firearm. As such, these parts cannot function independently of each other. However, because the upper and lower receiver can be easily separated, you can swap out the parts as needed. This interchangeability allows you to switch up your experience as you see fit.
The Upper Receiver alone is not considered to be a firearm and is therefore not regulated in most cases. The upper receiver contains the barrel, the bolt carrier group, and the charging handle. This component can be removed and exchanged for different styles or to replace faulty components. As the upper receiver is not regulated, you do not need a permit to buy a replacement part or exchange it for another style.
The Lower Receiver is the “framework” of the AR-15, which contains the trigger, magazine well, stock, and safety—essentially all the components needed to make a gun work. Its role in the functionality of a firearm is so crucial that it is considered the regulated “firearm” component. You’ll find the serial number on this part, and the purchase of parts or replacement of parts must comply with local legislation pertaining to the procurement of firearms. This includes purchasing from an authorized gun shop.
The Role of a Lower Receiver
As your AR-15’s firing mechanism, it’s evident that what you choose will impact your experience. The beauty of the AR-15 is its ability to be customized. While you’ll be able to swap out the upper receiver, you want to find a lower receiver that can meet your needs no matter the upper.
Some aspects of the completed gun that are heavily influenced by your choice of lower receiver are:
